Many people today are concerned about environmental problems, from extinction
of wildlife species to traffic congestion and air that's unfit to breathe. But
these problems often seem too big to solve, leaving us powerless to act.
That's where Friends of the Earth local groups come in. We are made up of
people from all walks of life who share a common concern for the state of the
planet and a desire to do something about it.
In 250 communities around England,
Wales and Northern Ireland we are a powerful force for environmental protection.
By joining us in Sheffield you have the power to help change your world making
it a healthier and safer place to live.

Evening Meetings |
|
 |
Every third Monday of each month, we meet in the Red Deer pub in the city
Centre. We meet upstairs in the private smoke free room. We usually spend about 2 hours talking about latest issues and planning
campaigns. We sometimes invite representative of other groups or campaigns to
come along and tell us what they're up to. Everyone is welcome, no matter what
your occupation is, or what time you have. Whether you're working, unemployed,
retired or a student, your skills and enthusiasm can help make Sheffield FoE
more effective. Click here for more details about
our meetings.
Our regular meetings are held upstairs at the Red Deer
pub which creates problems with access as a steep flight
of stairs must be climbed. To provide a partial solution
to this problem, we are trying to hold four meetings
(once a quarter) at Recycling Matters on Spital Hill. We
are aiming for the first meeting to start in February
2006 so please contact
Steve for
the latest information.

There are also opportunities to visit Friends of the Earth’s annual
conference where you can meet like minded people and talk to the staff from
Friends of the Earth’s head office in London. We also attend regional meetings
during the year as a way of networking and learning from other campaigners.

Day Time Campaigning |
|
 |
The majority of Sheffield Friends of the Earth’s active campaigners have jobs
during the day so most campaigning work is done in the evenings and weekends or
whenever people have spare time. Because of this the monthly meetings are
organised in the evenings. However, we appreciate that
some people only have spare time during the day and cannot attend the evening
meetings. If you would like to get involved with day time campaigning then
please contact us.
You can also find other ways of campaigning during the day by looking at our
web site.

Stalls |
|
 |
Sheffield Friends of the Earth runs stalls several times a year at public
events such as the Green Fair and the Peace Fair. We always need volunteers to
spend a few hours running the stall. This involves selling environmentally
friendly products, giving away leaflets and explaining environmental issues to
the public. If you have not worked on a stall before then don’t worry – an
experienced group member will be on hand to show you what to do.
The other ways you can help with stalls is to publicise
the event or bring unwanted bric-a-brac to the stall which we can use for
the tom-bola.

Socialise |
|
 |
Campaigning on environmental issues isn’t all doom and gloom. Why not join us
at one of our meetings at the Red Deer pub where we socialise
after meetings. We sometime plan outings to places such as the Centre for
Alternative Technology and have taken part in bowling competitions.

Distribute
Membership Leaflets |
|
 |
We are always trying to attract new
paying members to fund the group’s work and we especially would like more active
members. If you can distribute some of our membership leaflets to places where
the public regularly visit then place contact the group co-ordinator by clicking
here. Similarly, if you can inform people about our website then that is another
good way of spreading the message about our work.

How much does it cost?
Each weekly entry costs £1. So every £1 you play will add up to a big change for
the planet and for people.
How does the prize draw work?
After we receive your entry from, we’ll write to confirm the date of your first

selected by a random number generator.
