Saturday 16 or 23 Saturday 16th June 2007 (or 23rd June), 12-4pm: Climate change and Local Planning workshop, Friends of the Earth office, 26-28 Underwood Street, London

The Government has recently published a draft national planning document that will transform the way that climate change is considered in planning decisions. The purpose of the day is to outline how this new document may be of use to local groups both through proactive lobbying to improve your own councils planning documents, and also by helping to respond to planning applications.

Hugh Ellis, FOE’s planning expert will be running the day.

Nick Rau, Renewables Campaigner will also be on hand to discuss issues around individual renewable applications.

Background information: Because of the priority on The Big Ask climate bill campaign, we are sorry but we do not have much capacity to support local groups work with local councils. This day is intended as a one off event to inform you about the current situation in national planning policy, and to suggest what documents exist to help you campaign locally. Unfortunately we will not be able to provide ongoing support after the day on individual planning issues.

Book your place: The event is free (you will have to provide your own sandwiches sorry!). Please book your place by emailing alex.phillips@foe.co.uk or ringing 020

7566 1673. (We will confirm that the day is going ahead as soon as we have expressions of interest from at least 15 people).

Location and Details of General Meetings

Sheffield Friends of the Earth meetings are usually held at 8 p.m. at the Red Deer pub, 18 Pitt Street. This is near to the University of Sheffield just off West Street (See map below). Most meetings take place in the upstairs meeting room which is in a smoke free environment. If the room has already been booked by a different group then we will meet downstairs in the main pub. Please phone a co-ordinator if you require more details or want to check that a meeting is taking place.

We usually spend about 2 hours talking about latest issues and planning campaigns etc. We sometimes invite representative of other groups or campaigns to come along and tell us what they're up to. Everyone is welcome, no matter what your occupation is, or what time you have. Whether you're working, unemployed, retired or a student, your skills and enthusiasm can help make Sheffield FoE more effective.

Members of Sheffield Friends of the Earth at a recent meeting

You don't have to be an expert - there are plenty of ways that anyone can help out, from running stalls, distributing leaflets, putting up displays and organising raffles and street collections, to writing letters, giving talks, planning media stunts or helping keep the books. If you want to gain more in depth knowledge about the issues, our specialist campaign staff can provide information, training and advice - it's your chance to share ideas and learn new skills.

If you are under 18 years of age then you are able to attend meetings so long as  you are accompanied by an adult. So it's probably best to phone the co-ordinator  so that a group member can meet up with you before entering the pub.

For public transport information phone the travel line on 01709 51 51 51 or visit the web site at www.sypte.co.uk
